Producer Profile - Densholme Community Care Farm
Who Are They?
Located in Great Hatfield on the way to Hornsea, Densholme is an organic care farm owned by Denys Fell. The Densholme Action Project is managed by Paul Hanson, a former schoolteacher that developed a passion for organic growing when he lived in Spain for 8 years.
The farm is a community project, a social enterprise, with a therapeutic theme woven into it – to help various organisations and groups of people with learning disabilities, mental health problems etc to benefit from the farm by participating in activities such as learning about growing or maybe just getting involved to enjoy themselves and hopefully provide relaxation. At least 3 days a week are spent doing this currently.
What Do They Grow?
The produce varies, although here at Arthur St we have recently been lucky enough to enjoy wonderful vegetables such as Maris Baird potatoes, beetroot, fresh crisp cabbages and very tasty swedes in the organic box deliveries.
The Densholme Philosophy
Paul tells us: “This is our third summer of growing and we are learning all the time. Everything is done by hand on the farm and I’m getting to know the soil all the time so often it can be hit and miss. The results are very pleasing though. We currently survive on volunteers (we’d like more volunteers if possible), funding, and a little bit of revenue from organisations like Arthurs Organics. The project was created in the hope that we could help various groups in the community via them growing and enjoying fresh organic produce free from pesticides and fertilisers. My dream is to keep is going over the long term and help expand it.
We are evolving all the time through the amazing support we have had and forthcoming projects include an organic fruit and nut orchard, some sheep & goats and our newly planted woodland. We also have an eco-building in the pipeline that we are planning with Natural England and we hope to use this to provide an education / work space."
Why Arthur's?
"Arthurs were a great match for us to work with as we think on similar lines and have similar principles. We’re glad that their customers are enjoying our produce.”
Paul, we couldn’t agree more – we think your project is fantastic and the limited produce you supply us with is completely delicious, plus you are just down the road!.
